Austria: Population

Austria Population

With the Alps covering over 60% of the countryside, Austria has a relatively small population compared to the majority of Western and central European states, with 93 people per sq km. You will also find that dialects, folklore and other traditions vary from town to town. The Alps previously acted as treacherous boundaries that often isolated pockets of the Austrian community. With such a lot of diversity in Austrian cultural traditions, it is a good idea to travel round the country during your stay in order to discover these quirks. Bordered by so many Eastern European countries, it is not surprising that Austria has linguistic influences, including Hungarian and Romanian. However, recent figures show that over 90% of the 8 million strong population are German speaking.
